If you want to ride faster in triathlon, cycling is often the discipline where improvement comes quickest. At first, this may seem daunting to a beginner with limited bike experience. However, confidence usually grows quickly once regular training begins.

Like swimming, cycling supports your body weight. Therefore, it generally places less impact on the body than running. Even so, poor setup or a crash can still cause injury.
This guide provides practical starting points rather than covering every technical detail. In addition, many books and magazines explore cycling and triathlon in greater depth.

Ride Faster with the Correct Bike Position
A correct bike setup can help you ride faster and reduce the risk of injury. In contrast, a poor position may cause discomfort, wasted energy or poor handling.
Most quality bike shops employ experienced cyclists. Therefore, they should be able to complete a basic setup. When the position is right, the bike should feel like an extension of your body.
As a general starting point, stand over the bike without shoes. Ideally, there should be about 2.5 cm between the top tube and your crotch.
Improve Aerodynamics Gradually
The aim is to create a position that improves efficiency without reducing control. Although riders share some common setup principles, every final position should suit the individual cyclist.
Your body creates most of the aerodynamic drag. Therefore, gradually adapt to a lower and flatter position. However, do not force an aggressive position before your mobility and strength allow it.
Other areas that need attention include:
- Crank length
- Saddle height
- Saddle setback
- Reach to the handlebars
Set the Correct Saddle Height
Saddle height is one of the most important bike settings. Fortunately, several simple methods can provide a useful starting point.
One traditional method uses the cyclist’s heels. Place both heels on the pedals and pedal backwards. If the pelvis rocks from side to side, the saddle is too high. Lower it until the rocking just disappears.
Another method begins with an inside-leg measurement. Measure from the floor to the highest point of the crotch. Then calculate 109% of that measurement. Measure the result from the top of the saddle to the centre of the pedal axle.
Even so, this figure is only a guide. Saddle rigidity, shoe size, heel movement and event type can all influence the final height.
Check Saddle Setback and Reach
The saddle’s forward and rearward position depends partly on femur length. However, riding style and event type also affect the setup.
Road cyclists often sit farther back. In comparison, triathletes commonly use a more forward position with aerobars. Steeper seat angles can also help some athletes transition into the run.
A simple check uses a plumb line. First, place the cranks horizontally. Then drop the line from the centre of the knee. As a general guide, it should pass close to the pedal axle.
Reach also matters. While holding the drops, bring one knee to its highest point. There should still be a small gap between the knee and the bent elbow.
For a more precise result, use a professional bike-fit system. This approach can refine saddle height, setback, reach and handlebar position.

Ride Faster with Proper Shoe & Cleat Setup
Most modern pedal and shoe systems include some float. This allows limited sideways movement and supports the natural motion of the ankles and knees.
Pedalling Technique to Ride Faster
The aim is to apply force smoothly throughout the pedal stroke. This helps reduce dead spots and improves efficiency.
As the pedal moves downward, allow the heel to drop slightly. Then lift the heel as the pedal begins to rise. This action is often called ankling.
As a result, the workload spreads across more muscles. The rider can therefore maintain speed for longer.
Cadence for Faster Triathlon Cycling
A useful cadence range for many triathletes is 85–100 rpm. However, the best cadence still depends on the rider and terrain.
During the base phase, begin with smaller gears. Then gradually increase the load as fitness and strength improve.

Choose Gears to Ride Faster
Choosing the correct gears is important if you want to ride faster. The best option depends on two main factors: the rider’s stage of development and the demands of the event.
Terrain also matters. For example, a hilly course may require a wider range of gears than a flat time trial.
Other important considerations include:

- Big gears cause fatigue quicker
- Recovery is faster on small gears
- Using big gears constantly causes in time trials limits a riders ability in other events
- More economical using smaller gears
- Top time trialists still achieve fast rides on smaller gears coupled with appropriate technique.
Training to Ride Faster
Most athletes can make progress with two or three focused cycling sessions each week. In addition, an indoor trainer can help you achieve more when time is limited.
The weekly foundation should include one long aerobic ride. Depending on experience, this ride may eventually extend beyond the race distance.
Also include one interval session of about an hour. An indoor trainer works well because it allows controlled efforts without interruptions.
Finally, add a regular benchmark ride. For example, complete a 20 km time trial on the same course once each month. Alternatively, use an undulating route to develop climbing strength.
Group rides can also be useful. They provide company and help develop practical skills such as drafting, positioning and communication.
Consistent training and suitable equipment should produce better results. More importantly, they should increase your enjoyment of the sport.
