Triathlon Training FAQs

Ironman, 70.3, Olympic Distance, Sprint Distance and more...

Our triathlon training FAQs answer some of the most common questions athletes ask about personalised programs, coaching support, training schedules and preparing for different race distances. Multisport Consultants works with athletes from beginners through to experienced competitors across Sprint, Olympic, 70.3 and Ironman events.

How do I enquire about a training program?

The first step is to request a training program online. Enter your details into the enquiry form and Multisport Consultants will contact you to discuss your requirements.

Before your program begins, a consultation with Nick Croft helps establish your goals, training history, available training time and other details needed to tailor your program.

Do you specialise in Ironman training?

Ironman and 70.3 coaching are a significant part of the work undertaken by Multisport Consultants. However, athletes training for all triathlon distances are supported, from Sprint and Olympic Distance through to 70.3 and Ironman.

MSC also works with single-sport endurance athletes and people preparing for specific endurance challenges.

What level of athletes do you coach?

Multisport Consultants works with athletes of all levels, from complete beginners through to experienced and elite competitors.

The program is developed around the individual athlete rather than assuming that everyone should follow the same training structure.

Are training programs structured to the individual?

Yes. Your lifestyle, available training time, working hours, current fitness, experience and individual goals are taken into consideration when developing your training.

This allows the program to fit around your life while still providing the structure required to progress towards your goals.

Does triathlon training change throughout the year?

Yes. Training loads and cycles should vary throughout the year according to your goals, race schedule and stage of preparation.

Changing the training emphasis can help maintain motivation while allowing appropriate periods for building fitness, race-specific preparation, recovery and regeneration.

Do I need to swim with a squad?

Training with a swim squad can be a great help, but it is not essential. If work, location or lifestyle makes squad swimming difficult, suitable swim sessions can be incorporated into your individual training program.

Your swimming sessions can therefore be matched to your current ability and overall training requirements.

What are your triathlon coaching fees?

Fees vary according to the type of program you choose and the level of coaching interaction you require.

You can view the available options on our triathlon training programs page and choose the level of support that best suits your needs.

What happens if I am injured or sick?

You are charged only while you are actively training. Therefore, if an injury or illness prevents you from training for a week or two, your program can be placed on hold while you recover.

During your recovery you can still contact Multisport Consultants with questions and for feedback or guidance relating to your return to training.

How do you monitor athletes on a training program?

Regular feedback is encouraged. Interaction with Multisport Consultants depends on the coaching program selected and the needs of the individual athlete.

Athletes are encouraged to provide training feedback so their progress can be monitored and their training adjusted where appropriate.

Do you provide pre-race and post-race support?

Yes. Ongoing support is provided to current athletes, including pre-event guidance, race preparation advice and post-event feedback.

Coaching updates, useful training information and squad news are also provided to MSC athletes.

Do you provide triathlon training information for beginners?

Yes. These triathlon training FAQs are only a starting point. MSC athletes can also receive guidance on training terminology, heart rate training, equipment, choosing a bike and basic sports nutrition.

For additional information about sports nutrition and fuelling for training and competition, the Sports Dietitians Australia website provides useful resources for athletes.

Are one-on-one triathlon training sessions available?

Yes. If you are visiting Noosa, you can enquire about arranging a personal session with Nick Croft.

For athletes living on the Sunshine Coast or in the Brisbane region, individual or small-group sessions may also be available by appointment. Regular training squads are run in Noosa throughout the year.

Do I need to follow a training program all year?

No. Some downtime at the end of a season can be valuable for both physical and mental recovery.

This may include participating in activities outside triathlon or your primary sport. Every athlete has different goals and levels of experience, so the appropriate amount of recovery time will vary.
